Green Gram Curry/ Pesalu Pachidi

Serves: 4- 6 people

Ingredients:

For soaking:

  • 1 cup green gram

  • 1 tsp fenugreek /methi seeds

  • 1 cup water

For Curry:

  • 1 big chopped onion

  • 2 big chopped tomatoes

  • 35 cloves garlic

  • 10 curry leaves

  • 1/4 tsp turmeric

  • 20 crushed peppercorns

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 2 pinches hing

  • 3 tbsp chopped coriander

  • 1 tsp jaggery 

  • 2 inch tamarind water 

  • 12 red chilies

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • 3 cups water

  • salt (as per taste)

Instruction:

  1. Soak green gram and fenugreek/methi seeds for 10 hours.

  2. Strain the water after 10 hours and keep it aside.

  3. Heat the cooker pan with some oil.

  4. Splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds, crushed and peppercorns.

  5. Add curry leaves, garlic and saute .

  6. Add red chilies, turmeric, hing and give a nice mix.

  7. Add onions, tomatoes and saute till soft.

  8. Then add green gram and saute for 3 mins.

  9. After that add salt, jaggery ,tamarind water and stir in well to combine the flavors well.

  10. Add water, give a nice mix and pressure cook for 2 whistles.

  11. Once the pressure releases open the cooker and add coriander.

  12. Give a nice mix and add water to adjust the consistency.

  13. Serve hot with chapathis, pulkas or steamed rice.
